For the second year in a row the Gellatly Bay Goats Peak Community Association (GBGPCA) was invited to present at the City’s annual “Committee of the Whole” meeting. The meeting included the City of West Kelowna Mayor and Council, key City staff, and our neighbouring community associations and societies.
Nicole Waidman led the presentation on our behalf which was themed around “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly“.
The Good consisted of:
- Continued growth and maturity for our association
- The adoption of the Short Term Rental Regulations
- The opening of the multi-use path on Gellatly to Witt Road
- The opening of the roundabout at Gellatly and Carrington
- 2021 Community Excellence Award in Governance for the Our WK Community Vision and all the work thus far on the updated OCP, DCC and TMP plans
- The development application HOLD for the requested Gellatly rezoning
The Bad consisted of:
- Lack of engagement in the latter stages of the OCP process
- Clarification on when/where the Wildfire and Risk Mitigation plan will be addressed in the upcoming OCP
- Continued lack of enforcement around excessive noise, drug, alcohol and after hours park use
- Traffic, parking and road management including unsafe and limited access to our homes from last year’s Gellatly and Gellatly South road construction/closures and unsafe seasonal parking
The Ugly consisted of:
- The new sentence that has been included in the Jan. 2022 Growth Concept Draft which states support for 4-6 storey development within all neighbourhood centers (including Gellatly Bay and Goats Peak) in addition to support for the following sentence which we have advocated be removed in its entirety:
“Additional density will be considered where proposals address community-wide challenges (e.g. affordable housing, child care, public parking, etc.)”.
A full recording of this meeting can be viewed here which includes the presentation by the GBGPCA on item 6.1 (starting at 06:15) of the agenda.
Feedback from the City on the items raised is still pending. In the meantime we welcome your feedback on this presentation and invite you to continue to send us your neighbourhood ideas and concerns.
